What is Dental Cleaning?

It is a procedure of removing plaque and tartar build up on and around your teeth. Plaque and tartar can form if you allow food particles to remain in between your teeth.
Continued plaque and tartar build up can lead to tooth decay and gum diseases. An early form of gum disease can cause your gums to bleed and at more advanced stages you can start to have bone loss which ultimately cause your teeth to loosen up.
Just like anything else you need to maintain your teeth and gums in a good shape. With regular dental cleaning you minimize the chances of getting the gum disease. Dental cleaning is part of our routine dental care. The frequency of your cleanings will be determined based on your individual needs.

How the cleaning is performed?

Your cleaning will be performed by the dentist or by our trained hygienist. There are several different tools used to clean your teeth, this includes hand scalers and ultrasonic cleaning machine. These tools are used to remove plaque and tartar buildup in between your teeth. The second step is to polish your teeth. A special rotating rubber cup is used to rub polishing paste on your teeth. This is used to shine and remove any stains on your teeth.

Fluoride application

Lastly, our hygienst will apply fluoride on the teeth. It can be done in various ways – fluoride trays, fluoride varnish or fluoride rinse. After the fluoride application it is important that you don’t eat or drink anything for 30-45 mins. Fluoride treatment helps to prevent cavities and make them healthy & strong.
Many patients believe that dental cleaning makes your gums weaker and causes your teeth to loosen. This is completely a misconception, getting regular cleanings is of utmost importance to maintain good oral hygiene. There may be a transient period for couple of days after cleaning that your gums may be sore for some days, but once your gums have healed they will be better than before.
At any time if you need to have a consultation done, you can let our hygienist know and we would be happy to help you out.
