What Causes TMJ / TMD?

The exact cause of TMJ disorder is unknown, however there are some common factors which often leads to TMJ disorder.


  • Stress
  • Grinding or clenching of teeth
  • Injuries or trauma to the jaw, jaw joint or head & neck muscles
  • Problems causing stiffness of the joints. For example: arthritis
  • Improper movement of the ball & socket with the joint
  • Inflammation or displacement of the joint disk
  • Poor fitting dentures

At your consultation appointment the dentist will assess the severity of the problem. Symptoms may range from mild to severe pain in the jaw unilaterally or bilaterally. You may also experience clicking or popping sounds in the joint area as well as limited mouth opening. These debilitating problems can effect your daily routine activities.
Our dentist will assess your bite, ask question about stress, whether you clench or grind your teeth at night, history of chronic headache, positioning of wisdom teeth, tenderness in relation to your masticatory muscles. You should also expect some x-rays to be taken.
